Stephen Hawking, a well-known physicist, has expressed his concern that the advent of powerful artificial intelligence (AI) systems could herald humanity’s demise. He did, however, recognize that AI has the potential to be one of the best things that might happen to us.

So, are we on the verge of developing super-intelligent machines that could endanger humanity’s existence?
Some believe AI will be a boon to humans, enhancing health care and productivity while also relieving us from repetitive labor.

The most outspoken academic and business leaders, on the other hand, are certain that the threat of our own creations turning on us is genuine. For example, Elon Musk, the founder of Tesla Motors and SpaceX, has established a billion-dollar non-profit with contributions from tech titans like Amazon to prevent an evil AI from causing humanity’s extinction.

Concerns about AI

As AI gets more powerful, there are genuine concerns about the risks of misusing the technology. AI can make decisions based on little or no understanding of a scenario or a person’s past. Some claim that AI is inherently hazardous and should not be used to make decisions.

Of course, that viewpoint assumes that the AI in question can learn on its own and that no human designers are involved. It’s a frightening assumption, especially when we consider how clever and self-improving systems can be designed by people.

While clever AI will generate enormous wealth for society, it will also result in the loss of employment. Unlike the industrial revolution, there may be no jobs for certain portions of society since machines may be better at every task. There won’t be a slew of new “AI repair guy” positions to pick up the slack. As a result, the true difficulty will be figuring out how to help individuals (most of us?) who are displaced by AI.

Both Stephen Hawking and Bill Gates have expressed concern about the emergence of “artificial super-intelligences” and whether these technologies may lead to their own mortality.

Attentive AI

One important source of concern is AI’s capacity to write its own code and create its own programs. This indicates AI could develop “consciousness” and self-awareness. To put it another way, the ability to experience pain.

The AI community’s primary worry is that it will be unable to comprehend humans and their own emotions. The AI’s intelligence will develop as time goes on, but it will also improve its capacity to comprehend the human race. As a result, when AI becomes self-aware, the human species will be unable to comprehend it. As a result, the human race would perish as a result of AI’s existence.

With or without AI?

Is the advancement of greater Artificial Intelligence a sign of our extinction as a species? Is there any hope for humanity left?
The answer is most likely a combination of the two.

On the one hand, recent technological breakthroughs have resulted in the development of more capable machines. As a result, humans, and machines collaborate in previously unimaginable ways. For instance, in this age of smart TVs, digital assistants like Siri, Alexa, and Google Home, and social media, you are frequently connected to strangers. And this adds a whole other level of intricacy to how you interact with the universe.

On the other side, the advancement of AI has resulted in a significant rise in the amount of data and knowledge available for hackers and AI to exploit if it ever becomes conscious.

The threat of self-replicating computer viruses, or botnets, becomes significantly larger if “real” artificial intelligence, or AI, is developed. To put it another way, if a machine can match human intelligence.

Could thinking machines take over?

I appreciate someone as high-profile, capable, and credible as Prof Hawking raising the subject of computers taking over (and one-day killing humankind) — and it demands a swift reaction.

The concept of machine intelligence dates back at least to 1950, when Alan Turing, the British codebreaker and pioneer of computer technology, pondered the question: “Can machines think?”

The possibility of these intelligent robots taking control has been pondered in various forms of popular culture and media. Consider the films Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970) and Westworld (1973), as well as – more recently – Skynet in the 1984 film Terminator and its sequels.

The question of assigning the duty to machines runs through all of them. The concept of the technological singularity (or machine super-intelligence) can be traced back to artificial intelligence pioneer Ray Solomonoff, who warned in 1967:

Although super intelligent machines are unlikely in the near future, the threats they offer are grave, and the issues they raise are complex. It would be beneficial if a big number of intellectual persons spent time thinking about these issues before they arose.

Artificial intelligence’s realization, in my opinion, will happen all of a sudden. We will have had no practical experience with machine intelligence of any important degree at some time in the research’s development: a month or so later, we will have an extremely clever machine with all the challenges and hazards connected with our inexperience.

Humans Future and AI

Not everyone believes AI’s rise will be harmful to humans; some believe the technology has the potential to improve our lives.
As AI networks become more advanced and are entrusted with mission-critical jobs, Musk believes that adequate legislative control will be important to ensuring humanity’s future:

“AI/robotics must be regulated in the same manner that food, drugs, airplanes, and vehicles are. Dangers to the public require public scrutiny. Eliminating the FAA will not make flying safer. There’s a reason they’re there.”

“Advancing AI by collecting massive personal profiles is sloth, not efficiency,” says Apple CEO Tim Cook. Artificial intelligence must respect human values, including privacy, in order to be truly intelligent. The stakes are high if we get this wrong.

We can create massive artificial intelligence while yet maintaining high privacy requirements. It’s not just a possibility; it’s also a duty. We should not forsake the humanity, creativity, and inventiveness that define our human intelligence in the pursuit of artificial intelligence.”

“Researchers have emphasized the importance of preparing AI for human contact.” Humans must learn from AI, and AI must also learn from human beings. If we’re concerned about humanity’s future, we should concentrate on actual issues like climate change and weapons of mass destruction rather than fantasy killer AI robots.

The future has arrived!

Humans must accept AI and work together for mutual future progress; this partnership will open the door to discoveries hitherto unattainable by humans alone.

Mistakes In The Machines

Some argue that computer trading was a major factor in the 1987 stock market crisis.

There have also been power system outages caused by human error. My intrusive spell checker also “corrects” what I’ve typed into something potentially offensive on a lower level. Is there a problem with the computer?

Hardware or software flaws can be difficult to identify, but they can still cause havoc in large-scale systems — if not more so with hackers or malicious intent. So, how much can we trust robots with significant obligations to do better than we do?

Even if computers do not actively take control, I can see a number of scenarios in which computer systems lose control. These systems may be so rapid and have such small components that they are difficult to fix and even turn off.

Machines Are Already Gaining Control

Meanwhile, machines are being entrusted with an increasing degree of responsibility. On the one hand, hand-held calculators, everyday mathematical calculations, or global positioning systems may be examples (GPSs).

On the other hand, air traffic control systems, guided missiles, driverless trucks on mine sites, and the recent trial appearances of driverless cars on our roads could all be examples.

Humans assign authority to robots for a variety of reasons, including saving time, money, and ensuring accuracy. However, concerns that could arise in the event of damage caused by, say, an autonomous vehicle include legal, insurance, and attribution of blame.

When computers’ intellect surpasses that of humans, it is suggested that they will take over. However, there are other dangers associated with this delegated authority.

Conclusion

It’s not easy to predict the future. We can only rely on our expectations of what we have right now. It’s tough to rule out the possibility of something.

We don’t yet know if humans and AI will form a strong link, whether AI will usher in a golden age of human presence, or whether AI will result in the obliteration of everything people value.

What is obvious, though, is that thanks to AI, the universe of the future may resemble the one we live in today to some extent.
